Medical Imaging Technology and Radiography in Nigeria: Schools, Requirements & 2026 Updates

by Maryam A January 3, 2026
written by Maryam A

In Nigeria, the career path for medical imaging is split into two distinct academic routes: Medical Imaging Technology (MIT), offered by polytechnics and colleges of health technology, and Radiography, offered by universities.

As of January 2026, the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and the Radiographers Registration Board of Nigeria (RRBN) have updated the accreditation and curriculum for these programs to include advanced digital imaging and artificial intelligence (AI) in diagnostics.

1. Meaning of Medical Imaging Technology (Polytechnic Route)

While universities use the term “Radiography,” polytechnics offer the same field under the name Medical Imaging Technology (MIT). This program focuses on the technical operation of sophisticated machinery to create internal images of the body.

Modern Modalities Covered:

  • X-Ray Radiography: Using ionizing radiation for bone and chest imaging.

  • Computed Tomography (CT): Creating 3D cross-sectional images.

  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): Using magnetic fields (non-ionizing) for soft tissue imaging.

  • Ultrasonography: Using high-frequency sound waves.

  • Digital Imaging Processing: Managing digital files (PACS) and using AI for initial image screening.

2025/2026 JAMB Cut-Off Marks for Imaging Courses

To secure admission for the 2025/2026 academic session, you need to be aware of the specific “cut-off” marks, which are the minimum scores required to be considered for screening.

For Medical Imaging Technology (Polytechnic route) and Radiography (University route), the competitive nature of medical courses usually means the actual “departmental” cut-off is higher than the general school minimum.

Institution Type General JAMB Cut-Off Estimated Departmental Cut-Off (Imaging)
Federal Universities 150 โ€“ 200 230 โ€“ 260
State Universities 150 โ€“ 180 200 โ€“ 230
Polytechnics (ND) 100 140 โ€“ 160
Colleges of Health Tech 100 โ€“ 140 140 โ€“ 150

Specific Examples for 2026:

  • LASU (Stream 2): The general cut-off is 195. For competitive health-related courses, aim for 220+.

  • Rivers State University (RSU): The 2025/2026 departmental aggregate cut-off for Radiography is 56 (calculated as $\frac{\text{JAMB}}{8} + \text{Post-UTME score}$).

  • Anambra State College of Health Tech: While the general minimum is 100, medical imaging usually requires a JAMB score of 140 โ€“ 150 due to high application volume.

How to Calculate Your Admission Chances

Most schools for the 2025/2026 session have moved away from physical exams and now use a Composite/Aggregate Score.

The Common Formula:

$$\text{Aggregate} = \left(\frac{\text{JAMB Score}}{8}\right) + \text{O’Level Points}$$
  • A1 = 10 Points

  • B2 = 9 Points

  • B3 = 8 Points

  • C4/C5/C6 = 7/6/5 Points

Pro Tip: If you are applying to a College of Health Technology (like Shehu Idris or Offa Health Tech), they often prioritize your O’Level grades and an internal entrance interview over the JAMB score alone.

Important Deadlines (2025/2026)

  • Kwara State Polytechnic: Applications for the 2025/2026 session typically close in late July.

  • LASU Stream 2: Registration is currently ongoing but usually shuts down once the departmental quota is reached.

  • JAMB Change of Course: If your score is below 140, you should consider a “Change of Institution” to a private college of health technology where the requirements are more flexible.

This video provides a practical breakdown of how various Nigerian institutions calculate their final admission scores, helping you determine if your current marks are enough for competitive medical courses.

[Detailed] Polytechnic Grading System in Nigeria. (2026 Update)

by Maryam A January 3, 2026
written by Maryam A

In Nigeria, the polytechnic grading system is regulated by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE). As of 2026, polytechnics have strictly adhered to the standardized unified grading system to ensure National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) certificates carry the same weight across all institutions.

Unlike universities that primarily use a 5.0 scale, polytechnics use a 4.0 scale.

2026 Standardized Unified Grading System

The table below illustrates the currently approved scoring range, letter grades, and their corresponding weight (Grade Points) for Nigerian polytechnics.

Score Range (%) Letter Grade Grade Point (GP)
75 โ€“ 100 A 4.00
70 โ€“ 74 AB 3.50
65 โ€“ 69 B 3.25
60 โ€“ 64 BC 3.00
55 โ€“ 59 C 2.75
50 โ€“ 54 CD 2.50
45 โ€“ 49 D 2.25
40 โ€“ 44 E 2.00
0 โ€“ 39 F 0.00

Official Diploma Classification

At the end of your ND or HND program, your Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) determines your final class of diploma:

CGPA Range Class of Diploma
3.50 โ€“ 4.00 Distinction
3.00 โ€“ 3.49 Upper Credit
2.50 โ€“ 2.99 Lower Credit
2.00 โ€“ 2.49 Pass
0.00 โ€“ 1.99 Fail

NBTE Note: To progress from a National Diploma (ND) to a Higher National Diploma (HND), most institutions require a minimum of Lower Credit (2.50). Students with a Pass (2.00โ€“2.49) must typically complete two years of Industrial Training (IT) instead of one before becoming eligible for HND admission.

GPA System for Polytechnic Students

The table below shows the GPA system for polytechnic students:

Score (in percentage) Grade Grade Point Final CGPA Class of Degrees
100-80 A 4.00 3.50 โ€“ 4.00 Distinction
79-70 AB 3.50 3.00 โ€“ 3.49 Upper Credit
60-69 B 3.00 2.50 โ€“ 2.99 Lower Credit
59-50 BC 2.50 2.00 โ€“ 2.49 Pass
49-40 C 2.00 0.00 โ€“ 1.99 Fail

How to calculate GPA for first semester OND 1

Letโ€™s assume you offer the courses (listed below) and obtain grades as depicted in the table. The GPA can be calculated thus:

Course Code Credit Unit Grade Grade Points Quality Points (CU X GP) Total Points
GSP 101 3 A 4.00 2 X 4.00 8.00
GSP 105 2 B 3.00 2 X 3.00 6.00
GSP 111 2 C 2.00 2 X 2.00 4.00
GSP 201 2 C 2.00 2 X 2.00 4.00
COS 101 2 AB 3.50 2 X 3.50 7.00
STA 131 2 B 2.00 2 X 2.00 4.00
MTH 221 2 BC 2.50 2 X 2.50 5.00
TOTAL CREDIT UNITS 15 38

To calculate the first semester OND 1, use the following formula:

GPA = Total Points/ Total Credit Units =38/15 = 2.5

The first semester GPA is, therefore 2.5

How to calculate GPA for second semester OND 1

Letโ€™s assume you offer the courses (listed below) and obtain grades as depicted in the table. The GPA can be calculated thus:

Course Code Credit Unit Grade Grade Points Quality Points (CU X GP) Total Points
ย GLG 142 2 AB 3.50 2 X 3.50 7.00
ย GSP 208 2 B 2.00 2 X 2.00 4.00
ย GSP 202 2 C 2.00 2 X 2.00 4.00
ย PHY 196 3 C 2.00 2 X 2.00 4.00
ย GSP 106 2 BC 2.50 2 X 2.50 5.00
ย CHM 112 2 B 2.00 2 X 2.00 4.00
ย GSP 106 3 B 3.00 2 X 3.00 6.00
TOTAL CREDIT UNITS 16 34

To calculate the second semester OND 1, use the following formula:

GPA = Total Points/ Total Credit Units =34/16 = 2.1

The second semester GPA is, therefore 2.1

To calculate the cumulative grade point average (CGPA) for National Diploma (ND) 1, add the GPA of the first and second semesters and divide by 2 (the number of semesters). This is calculated to obtain the average.

The calculation goes thus:

OND 1 CGPA = (First Semester ND 1 GPA + Second Semester ND 1 GPA) / 2 = (2.5 + 2.1) / 2

CGPA = 4.6 / 2 = 2.3

Explanation of each Grade Level in a Polytechnic Setting

3.50 โ€“ 4.00 CGPA attracts a โ€˜Distinctionโ€™ class of degree. This is synonymous to a First Class degree in a Nigerian university.

Upper Credit class of degree is awarded to a student with 3.00 โ€“ 3.49 CGPA. This is synonymous with Second Class Honours (Upper Division) in Nigerian universities.

2.0 โ€“ 2.00 CGPA attracts a โ€˜Lower Creditโ€™ degree. This is synonymous with a โ€˜Second Class Honoursโ€™ (Lower Division) in Nigerian universities.

The same explanation goes for the โ€˜Passโ€™ and โ€˜Failโ€™ classes of degrees.

Why Understanding This Matters in 2026

  • HND Admissions: In 2026, competition for HND slots is high. Maintaining an Upper Credit significantly increases your chances of getting into top-tier polytechnics like Yaba College of Technology or Federal Polytechnic, Nekede.

  • University Direct Entry: If you plan to switch to a university, a Distinction (3.50+) is often required for competitive courses like Engineering or Accounting.

  • Employment: Many government agencies and private firms in Nigeria specifically request “at least a Lower Credit” for entry-level positions.

The Oyo state police command has detained policemen suspected of being involved in the shooting death of Samuel Akinsuyi, a student at Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic, Eruwa.

In a stop-and-search incident that occurred on his way from Eruwa to Ibadan, the student from the Department of Business Administration was allegedly shot in the leg by a police officer. The event sparked widespread outrage, with the Nigerian students’ group asking for the officer’s arrest.

It has been verified by the state police spokesman, DSP Adewale Osifeso, that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Ngozi Onadeko, has ordered an inquiry into the events that led to the regrettable tragedy.

According to Osifeso,

Debriefing and orderly room trials for all of the operators engaged have been completed, and they are now in the process of being identified and captured.”

Accordingly, the Commissioner of the Police is urging calm and reaffirming the promises of a thorough and careful investigation with appropriate punishments in compliance with applicable laws and legislation.”
