A Brief Background of Medicine

Medicine is the branch of science which deals with health and healing. It consists of nurses, doctors, and other specialists.

It covers disease diagnosis, treatment, and prevention, as well as medical research and a variety of other areas.

Medicine is concerned with promoting and maintaining good health and well-being.

Medicine comprises of different fields. Some of them include:

Surgery

Surgical operations are required to diagnose and treat certain diseases, malformations, and injuries. Instead of medication, they use instrumental and physical methods.

A surgeon can perform surgery to remove or replace sick tissue or organs or extract tissue for biopsy. In addition, they may remove undesirable tissue and send it to be diagnosed.

Clinical Practice

In a hospital or other healthcare setting, a clinician is a health practitioner who interacts directly with patients. Clinicians include nurses, doctors, psychotherapists, and other specialists.

Clinical Research

Researchers investigate whether diseases are present, why they occur, what can be done to treat or prevent them, what causes them to occur more frequently, and many other facets of health.

Man Looking Through A Microscope

Biomedical Research

The goal of this branch of study is to find solutions to prevent and treat diseases that cause illness or death.

Biomedical researchers examine biological processes and disorders using biotechnology tools. They want to create effective treatments and cures.

Psychotherapy

Counseling, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and other types of “talking cure” might be beneficial for persons suffering from mental health issues such as depression, stress, or chronic pain.

Branches of medicine include biochemistry, biophysics, anatomy, genetics, pathology, radiology, pharmacology, and a host of others.

Medicine and Surgery JUPEB WAEC Subject Combination

Candidates for Medicine and Surgery at any JUPEB-accredited university or institution must meet the following requirements:

  1. A minimum of 5 credit passes in Maths, English Language, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, or any other subject is required.
  2. Candidates’ bio data will be required for online registration.

The ideal JUPEB cut off mark for all JUPEB affiliated universities is 5 points; nevertheless, courses differ, hence cut off marks vary.

JAMB set a ceiling on cut-off marks for all schools, just like it did for UTME admission, so that no university, polytechnic, or college of education could fall below it.

The same is true for JUPEB direct entry admissions.

Heart Rate Monitor

SESSION 2021/2022 JUPEB CUT OFF POINTS FOR MEDICINE AND SURGERY

The overall cutoff threshold is 5, which means that you are automatically eligible to apply for admission; however, individuals with higher JUPEB scores have a better chance than those with lower scores.

All JUPEB affiliated schools accept 12 POINTS for Medicine and Surgery, with the exception of Obafemi Awolowo University, which accepts 13 POINTS for Medicine and Surgery from candidates having JUPEB results.

What is JUBEP?

JUPEB is a National Examination body responsible for administering examinations to students who have completed recognised subject combinations and are applying for Direct Entry admissions to Nigerian and partner overseas tertiary institutions.

The federal government of Nigeria recently approved the creation of this examinations body to fill the void left by the termination of Advance Level Examinations.

JUPEB Requirements

The candidate must have been exposed to an intensive scheme of academic work relevant to his or her proposed university subject to be eligible to take tests leading to the award of JUPEB’s Direct Entry Certificates.

  1. In any of the universities, each candidate must register, sit for examinations, and satisfy the Board in three disciplines and a General Studies course relevant to the proposed programme.
  2. General Studies for University Faculty courses will be based on applicable General courses suggested by each university for that Faculty.

Are there Advantages or Disadvantages of Using JUPEB to Gain Admission?

Yes, there are advantages and disadvantages of using JUPEB to gain admission.

Here are some of the advantages of using JUPEB to gain admission:

  1. JUPEB programme is a great choice for applicants seeking admission into the higher institution and who have sufficient funds to run JUPEB. It might be better than attempting to write JAMB and Post UTME, on a yearly basis, while awaiting admission into the university.
  2. With the JUPEB programme, there is a higher chance of gaining admission into the university as compared to students who sat for the JAMB UTME.
  3. JUPEB students gain admission into 200 level in the university.
  4. JUPEB students are taught and well-groomed for the examinations.
  5. According to statistics, it is easier for candidates to gain admission into their chosen course of study as compared to JAMB candidates.
  6. JUPEB students are able to easily acclimatize with the university environment.
  7. JUPEB programmes give candidates a chance to get a higher CGPA after admission.

Some of the disadvantages of using JUPEB to gain admission include:

  1. The JUPEB programme is extremely costly as compared to JAMB UTME.
  2. There might be the illusion of candidates thinking that they are already students. However, they haven’t been granted admission into the university.
  3. If you do not perform excellently, you will not be able to enroll in your desired course.
  4. There is no assurance that all JUPEB students will gain admission.
  5. JUPEB students who do not gain admission into their chosen university will not be refunded the fee for registering for the programme.

[VERIFIED] 49 Universities that Accept IJMB for Nursing in Nigeria

by Maryam A September 28, 2021
written by Maryam A

Nursing: A Brief Background

Nurses in Nigeria are licensed to practice professionally by the NMCN after completing extensive educational and clinical training and passing appropriate professional exams.

In Nigeria, becoming a nurse necessitates completing nursing training at a school of nursing, a school of basic midwifery, or a university.

The School of Nursing offers a three-year hospital-based programme that culminates in the award of a Certificate in General Nursing.

The curriculum is designed to allow nursing students to learn in the classroom for half of their training and then go on clinical placements for the other half.

In a similar vein, the school of basic midwifery offers a three-year training program for midwives.

Although it is progressively being phased out, this method is no longer the norm.

Nurses are also educated in Nigeria’s universities. Nursing programmes in the university usually run for five years. The programme leads to professional qualifications as well as a bachelor’s degree.

Student nurses take the professional test for the Certificate in General Nursing (RN) in their fourth year of study, and in their fifth year, they study Midwifery and Public Health Nursing, which is optional.

During the fifth year, student nurses enroll for professional examinations required to qualify them as Public Health Nurses (RPH) and Midwives (RM).

They are also awarded a bachelor’s degree in addition to their professional certificates.

They must undergo a one-year internship programme after graduation.

The internship programme is intended to provide students with clinical experience and assist them in honing their clinical skills before they acquire their license to practice.

Nurses in Nigeria specialise in a variety of fields, including: Renal Nursing, Public Health Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Paediatric Nursing, Accident and Emergency Nursing, Occupational Health Nursing, Anaesthetic Nursing, Critical Care Nursing, Orthopaedic Nursing, Geriatric Nursing, amongst others.

Everything You Need to Know about IJMB (Interim Joint Matriculation Board)

Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) is an approved, proven, and certified Advanced level curriculum moderated by Ahmadu Bello University with coordinating bodies at various tertiary institutions and study centers around the country.

At its inception, the program was intended to provide a chance for individuals who were unable to secure entrance to traditional degree programs at Northern Universities for a variety of reasons.

Candidates who have not yet received their Ordinary Level (O’ level) results are also eligible to apply.

The Federal Government has recognised the IJMB as a platform for gaining admission into higher institutions both in Nigeria and overseas.

IJMB is a reliable programme. Every year, around 20,000 candidates apply for the programme, and more than 70% of those who apply are accepted into the 200 level of their desired institution and course.

IJMB is accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC). The programme offers an Advanced level examination that qualifies students for Direct Entry (DE) into the 200 level.

Candidates must choose any THREE (3) A/L IJMB Subject Combination that corresponds to their selected university field of study, whether it be a Science, Art, or Social Science course.

Candidates would then be lectured for the required amount of time at their chosen Study Centre before taking the final examination. Successful candidates can use their IJMB certificate to get admission to any Nigerian tertiary institution’s 200 level via Direct Entry after completing the programme.

More than 80% of Nigerian federal, state, and private universities now recognise and accept the IJMB certificate.

The program is organised into two (2) semesters and lasts for one academic session (9-10 months).

Your ordinary level result is the primary admission qualification for the IJMB. Anyone who wishes to apply for the IJMB must have finished their secondary school education. Candidates who are awaiting their ordinary level results can still apply for the IJMB programme. Candidates who are nearing the end of their secondary school education are also eligible to apply.
