Lagos State Polytechnic: A Comprehensive Review

by Maryam A April 4, 2021
written by Maryam A

Lagos State Polytechnic is a government-funded and managed institution of higher learning situated in Ikorodu, Lagos State. Popularly known by the acronym LASPOTECH, the polytechnic was formerly called Lagos State College of Science and Technology. At the undergraduate level, the school offers National Diploma and Higher National Diploma courses.

With the promulgation of Lagos State Edict No. 1 of 1978, the polytechnic was founded with retroactive effect from June 1, 1977. Management and Business Studies, Accountancy and Finance, Insurance, Secretarial Studies, and Basic Studies were the five departments that began classes in January 1978 at a temporary location (now the Isolo Campus). The latter offered GCE ‘A’ Level Arts in the departments of Arts and Sciences.

The School of Agriculture in Ikorodu was integrated with the Institution on August 1, 1978, and it became the nucleus of the new permanent site in Ikorodu. The Lagos State Government changed the name of the institution from Lagos State College of Science and Technology (LACOSTEC) to Lagos State Polytechnic in 1988, after ten years of operation (LASPOTECH).

The Polytechnic Administration, which had been based at Isolo Campus since its formation, moved to its permanent location at Ikorodu in May 2000.

Lagos State Polytechnic currently has over 56 accredited programmes. On its website, Lagos State Polytechnic operates a portal (EDUPORTAL): www.mylaspotech.edu.ng. The platform is currently being used to process admissions and registrations for full-time students and School of Part-Time Studies students.

The institution, which started lectures with 287 pioneer students in 1978, now has about 50,000 full-time and part-time students. Currently, the Polytechnic has three campuses: Isolo, Surulere, and Ikorodu. The latter now serves as the Institution’s permanent location.

The mission of Lagos State Polytechnic is “to produce skilled manpower for commerce and industry using modern facilities and competent personnel for the benefit of all.”
