OAU lecturers go on strike in protest of underpaid allowances.

by ajibolaaina February 1, 2022
written by ajibolaaina

Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife branch, have begun a strike in protest over the school’s management’s failure to pay earned academic allowance.

The strike notice was contained in a statement released by OAU ASUU Chairman, Dr. Adeola Egbedokun, indicating that the union made the decision during Monday’s emergency ASUU congress.

The union stated that it initiated the strike because the university administration made no genuine attempt to pay eligible members their due allowances.

It reads as follows:

“Congress noted that there was no serious commitment on the part of the University to effect payment of EAA to deserving members. Congress also noted that all political and diplomatic means to resolve the imbroglia have failed. Consequently, congress resolved that:

“Total, Comprehensive and Indefinite Strike should commence immediately. The strike must not be called off without a congress resolution to the effect.

“Payment of EAA must be based on ASUU computation. Anything short of this would be unacceptable. The Strike Coordinating Committee be set up to monitor the strike.

“Based on the above and on the strength of the permission granted by ASUU National President, the Chairman, on behalf of the congress declared the commencement of ASUU OAU’s strike at exactly 11:53 am”.

UNIPORT Releases Final Batch Admission List for 2026/2027 Session

by ajibolaaina January 31, 2022
written by ajibolaaina

The management of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has officially released the Final Batch of admission lists for the 2026/2027 Academic Session. This announcement covers both UTME and Direct Entry candidates who participated in the institutional screening exercise.

Prospective students are urged to follow the updated clearance requirements and procedures below to finalize their enrollment in the “Unique UNIPORT.”

1. Mandatory JAMB CAPS Action

All admitted candidates must first regularize their admission on the JAMB Central Admission Processing System (CAPS).

  • Log in: Visit the JAMB e-Facility Portal and log in with your registered email and password.

  • Accept Offer: Navigate to “Access my CAPS” and click on “Admission Status” to accept the offer.

  • Print Letter: Once accepted, proceed to print your official JAMB Admission Letter.

2. Official UNIPORT Clearance Procedure (2026 Update)

In line with current administrative guidelines under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Owunari A. Georgewill and Registrar Dr. Gloria O. Chindah, the clearance process is strictly time-bound.

  • Two-Week Deadline: Candidates are required to complete their registration within two (3) weeks of receiving their admission offer. Failure to do so may result in the admission being deemed forfeited.

  • No Acceptance Fee: UNIPORT maintains its policy of not charging an acceptance fee for new students. Disregard any requests for payment regarding an “Acceptance Fee”; only official school charges via the ARIS Portal are valid.

  • Physical Clearance: After online data capture and payment of school charges, students must report to their respective College/Faculty Officers for physical verification of original credentials.

3. How to Check the UNIPORT Admission List

You can verify your name on the school’s official lists by using the links below:

  • Check via UNIPORT Portal: UTME FINAL BATCH ADMISSION LIST

  • Direct Entry Status: DIRECT ENTRY ADMISSION LIST

4. Critical Note on O’Level Uploads

Admission CANNOT be granted to candidates who have not uploaded their O’level results (WAEC/NECO/NABTEB) to JAMB CAPS. If you are seeing “Admission in Progress” (AIP) on your dashboard, visit a JAMB-accredited CBT center immediately to ensure your results are properly uploaded.

Financial Aid: NELFUND for UNIPORT Students

As of early 2026, UNIPORT students are eligible for the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND). If you require financial assistance for your tuition, ensure your National Identification Number (NIN) is correctly linked to your student profile to facilitate a smooth application.

Congratulations to all newly admitted students!

Shuaibu Ibrahim, the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), highlighted concerns about the state of orientation camps around the country during the 2022 NYSC annual management meeting in Abuja.

Ibrahim, although noting the scheme’s numerous accomplishments, stated that it has been plagued by the failure of some essential parties to perform their statutory responsibilities. He noted that the project was confronted with deteriorating Orientation Camp facilities, insufficient Corps Lodges, and a dearth of suitable office space in several states.

He also cited the supply of start-up money for corps members who have acquired entrepreneurial skills as a significant difficulty the organization is currently facing.

COREN to offer career opportunities to Nigerian graduates in 17 countries

by ajibolaaina January 31, 2022
written by ajibolaaina

COREN is now in the process of becoming a provisional signatory to the Washington Accord (WA), which grants job privileges to recognized Nigerian graduates of engineering.

Engineers from signatory countries – Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Malaysia, India, Germany, Russia, and Sri Lanka – are hired without further examination under the pact.

Ali Rabiu, President of COREN, announced this during a Train-the-Trainers Workshop on Outcome-Based Engineering Education (OBE) for delegates from Nigerian universities in the North-Central zone.

“We aim to fulfill our responsibility of regulating engineering practice in all its manifestations in order to bring it up to worldwide standards and to grow engineering programs in Nigerian universities,” he stated.

Rabiu stated that COREN intends to strengthen the accreditation system and facilitate the process of local and worldwide recognition of engineering degrees earned at Nigeria’s higher educational institutions.

The following stage, he explained, is to assemble a critical mass of knowledgeable and experienced individuals in OBE, as well as mentees of the OBE learning environment, who will pioneer and champion capacity development for the various strata of engineering professionals involved in training, practicing, and regulation (now referred to as University-based OBE implementers).

“The objective is to equip participants to acquire knowledge and skills in OBE and to train others in the concepts and practices of Outcome-Based Education (OBE) in Nigerian universities,” he explained.

Prof. J. A. Enokela, Dean, College of Engineering, Joseph Tarka University, Makurdi, expressed gratitude to COREN for making the workshop a reality, noting that the training is one of the best things that would happen in Nigeria’s drive to revolutionize the profession.
