The Federal Ministry of Education has began addressing the Academic Staff Union of Universities‘ demands (ASUU). The ministry confirmed this in a press statement issued Thursday by Ben Goong, its Director of Press and Media Relations.

The education ministry stated in a press release headlined, ‘Federal Government establishes white paper drafting panels for tertiary institutions,’ that ten white paper drafting panels have been established.

“Following receipt of reports from Visitation Panels to Tertiary Institutions last year, Education Minister, Adamu Adamu, has established White Paper Drafting Panels for Tertiary Institutions across the country,” the statement said in part.

“Ten White Paper Drafting Panels have been established for 36 universities, six for 25 polytechnics, and five for 21 colleges of education.

“One Panel is tasked with the responsibility of drafting a White Paper for four interuniversity centers. In the next days, the Panels will be inaugurated.

“All Panels have two weeks to submit their reports from the date of their establishment.”

As of the time of posting this story, ASUU President Prof Emmanuel Osodeke could not be reached for comment.

A fire outbreak at the Lagos campus of the Nigerian Law School, which is located on Ozumba Mbadiwe Street in Victoria Island, has resulted in the hospitalization of no fewer than five people.

According to reports, the incident occurred on Wednesday night, February 15, and caused a commotion among the residents, who fled in separate directions, with some of them being injured as a result.

The fire, which started on the first floor of the 5-story building hostel, which houses over 1500 law students on the Lagos campus, was reportedly triggered by an electrical fault and began at approximately 10 p.m. from the first floor of the structure.

The fire was extinguished by hostel security personnel who acted quickly and shut down the main power supply before the arrival of the state fire department, which arrived a few minutes later.

FUOYE debunks yet another fictitious job advertisement posted on social media.

by ajibolaaina February 17, 2022
written by ajibolaaina

FUOYE has disproved yet another fictitious job advertisement that has gone popular on social media, according to the university’s spokesperson.

The bogus announcement was titled “Non-Academic Staff Recruitment at Federal University Oye-Ekiti(FUOYE)” and contained the following text:

A portion of the statement reads, in part, as follows:

“The Federal University of Oye in Ekiti was established by the Federal Government of Nigeria in accordance with an executive order issued by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, to establish nine Federal Universities in Nigeria.”

The Federal University of Oye in Ekiti is now recruiting for the available posts.

“All adequately qualified applicants who are currently employed as tenured employees on the University’s payroll and who seek to be converted from their current classification to fill the empty non-academic posts indicated below are encouraged to apply.”

As stated in a statement issued on Thursday by the FUOYE Public Relations Officer, Foluso Ogunmodede, the bogus recruitment notice for non-academic staff included phony positions for Administrative Officer 11, higher executive officer, security officer accountant and auditor among other positions.

In addition to reminding the public that there is no such vacancy notice emanating from the Management, FUOYE, through its Public Relations Officer, cautions members of the public to disregard the advertisement, adding that any vacancy announcement will be made known to the public through legitimate means whenever there is a need to do so in the institution.

Members of the public are therefore advised to disregard the bogus advertisement posted on the internet in order to avoid falling into the hands of internet fraudsters who are currently masquerading as legitimate businesses on social media and defrauding innocent and unsuspecting Nigerians of their money.

Students obstruct the entrance to UNIBEN in protest of the ongoing ASUU warning strike

by ajibolaaina February 17, 2022

Students from the University of Benin (UNIBEN) demonstrated on Wednesday by blocking the heavily traveled Benin-Ore-Sagamu road in protest of the Academic Staff Union of Universities’ ongoing industrial action.

After its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Lagos on Monday, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) launched a four-week warning strike to push the Federal Government to follow the renegotiated 2009 agreement it reached with the government.

The students gathered at the entrance of the Ugbowo campus of the university, yelling slogans and singing solidarity songs such as “aluta continua…” and “education is our right,” among other things.

The students expressed their dissatisfaction with the ongoing strike by university instructors and encouraged the federal government to take the ASUU’s demands into consideration.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the protesting students held placards with varied slogans, including “5 years course has turned into 7 years; FG settle ASUU” and “Enough is Enough.”

Some of them turned the highway into a football field and began playing in groups as the student organizers handed out bottles of water, soft drinks, pies, and doughnuts to the demonstrators in order to keep them hydrated and satisfied.

The students’ action resulted in a four-hour traffic jam on the highway, forcing many cars to bypass the road and forcing those heading into the Edo capital to modify their routes.

Because of this, passengers were stranded and many had to walk a great distance before being transported to their final destinations by taxi or bus.

FUTO sues ASUU over Pantami’s professorship

by ajibolaaina February 16, 2022
written by ajibolaaina

The Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) administration has taken the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to court over the rejection of the professorship position conferred on the Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, by the university administration.

Following reports that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) threatened to censure her and other council members involved in Pantami’s promotion to the level of Professor in Cyber Security, the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nnenna Oti, announced the decision.

According to a top management employee who spoke to journalists, ASUU does not have the authority to direct the university council and its Senate on who should be promoted and what the criteria should be for promoting someone to the rank of professor.

Remember that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) recently stated that Dr. Isa Pantami’s promotion to the position of professor was unconstitutional because it was impossible for one person to simultaneously serve as a minister and a lecturer at the same time. The union also threatened to censure the university’s vice-chancellor as well as other members of the university’s council who were involved in the situation.

Strike: NANS threatens action against ASUU, FG over strike action

by ajibolaaina February 15, 2022
written by ajibolaaina

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned the decision of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to embark on a four-week industrial action in protest of the federal government’s failure to implement the terms of their agreement with the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

According to a statement attributed to the president of the association, Sunday Asefon, the association is prepared to go to any length, including confrontation, to ensure that the strike is terminated and that students and lecturers return to their respective classes.

For Asefon, it was a source of frustration that Nigerian students were always the victims of the conflict between the federal government and ASUU. He stated that the association was not in support of either ASUU or the federal government; rather, it was determined to ensure that the association’s impact was felt throughout the country in the coming days.

As part of its demands, the association called on President Muhammad Buhari to sack the ministers of labor and education, Chris Ngige and Adamu Adamu, respectively, accusing them of being unresponsive to the union’s demands. They also accused ASUU of failing to take the interests of students into consideration when taking certain steps.

The attention of the University of Maiduguri’s management has been attracted to multiple Facebook pages created by some yet-to-be-identified individuals that include the personal and official information of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aliyu Shugaba.

Undeserving individuals have been utilizing false accounts to intentionally embarrass him or to compromise the integrity of the Vice Chancellor’s office by making fraudulent proposals to or requesting undue favors from members of the general public who are unaware.

Even though Professor Shugaba has a personal Facebook account, he has never utilized it to transact any type of business or to give help or assistance to any individual or group in either his private capacity or on behalf of the University of Maiduguri.

The public is advised to ignore, or to draw the attention of the University or any relevant authority, to the activities of individuals or groups attempting to use social media platforms such as Facebook or Twitter to make an offer or transact any form of business in the name of the Vice-Chancellor or the University of Maiduguri while the University Management is closely working with relevant security agencies to track down the perpetrators.
