The Nigerian Senate has approved a bill that will convert the Federal Polytechnic, Offa, in the state of Kwara into a degree-awarding institute.

On Tuesday, February 1, the senate also approved a bill to establish the Guyuk School of Mines and Geological Studies.

Senator Ahmad Babba Kaita outlined the main reason for the establishment of the School of Mines and Geological Studies during his presentation.

With the passage of the FUTA (Amendment) bill, the Red Chamber granted authority for the upgrading of the Federal Polytechnic, Offa, in Kwara state, from a Diploma-awarding institution to a full-fledged Degree-awarding Federal University of Technology by the Federal Executive Council.

Furthermore, the upper legislative chamber approved a proposal to establish the Guyuk School of Mines and Geological Studies (SMGSH).

Following the deliberation of two distinct reports by the Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND, according to the Punch, both legislation were passed by the National Assembly.

The chairman of the committee, Senator Ahmad Babba Kaita, stated in his presentation that the establishment of the school of mines and geological studies will allow for the training of medium and junior level people for the mineral and mining industries.

As an additional benefit, the lawmaker stated that it would facilitate collaboration with other national and international institutions engaged in general exploration and mining of precious stones and ore. It would also promote teacher training, research, and the general development of teacher education, according to the legislator.
