The Federal Government has observed that the sub-biggest sector’s difficulty is poor management of monies granted to tertiary institutions, particularly polytechnics and colleges of education.

Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, made the remarks during the inauguration of the governing councils of eight new federal polytechnics and six new federal colleges of education. He also cautioned council members against corruption and meddling in the institutions’ day-to-day activities.

“Poor fund management continues to be a significant operating bottleneck in the sector,” he stated. It is expected that the government’s limited money will be used prudently.

“Also, because the government cannot supply all of the funding required to operate polytechnics and colleges of education, councils should think creatively and seek other revenue sources outside of government appropriations.

“In this context, councils should solicit assistance for their schools from philanthropic organizations, people, and other sources of cash through investments,” he stated.

Adamu warned that President Muhammadu Buhari would not hesitate to disband any council proven to be corrupt and/or inept, but said that with the calibre of men and women inaugurated, “I am hopeful that he would not have to employ his powers in this area.”

Adamu advised councils to adhere to the federal character principle when appointing staff, noting that some institutions have devolved into parochial and primordial enclaves, and the concept of universalism in education has been abandoned, particularly in areas of staff hiring.

He tasked members of the councils in particular with collaborating with the Federal Character Commission to ensure compliance.

The minister added that the drive to improve the quality of higher education output in Nigeria is the responsibility of governing councils, adding that he was confident they would bring their wealth of experience, adherence to and respect for the rule of law and due process, to bear in carrying out their responsibilities.

Stakeholders express concern about the hiring embargo in polytechnics.

Following the Federal Government’s employment embargo, the country’s polytechnics are experiencing a shortage of academic staff, raising worries among stakeholders.

Already, officials from the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Nigeria’s regulatory authority for polytechnics, who visited several institutions for evaluation and quality assurance, stated that the majority of schools failed accreditation due to a severe scarcity of required manpower.

Additionally, a senior NBTE official, who requested anonymity while bemoaning the impact of the Federal Government’s embargo on employment, stated that under the regulatory body’s normative instruments, the availability of the correct mix of workers is a critical necessity.

Investigations at the board’s headquarters in Kaduna revealed that stakeholders in the sub-sector, including the NBTE’s Executive Secretary, Prof Idris Bugaje, and the Committee of Federal Rectors (COFER), have written to the Education Minister, Adamu Adamu, and the Federation’s Head of Civil Service, seeking intervention.

Specifically, the NBTE leader bemoaned in a letter to the Federation’s Head of Service that the sector is currently suffering from an insufficient supply of technical staff as a result of the government’s failure to replace individuals who had left service.

He emphasized that the embargo is having an effect on currently running training programs. Bugaje cautioned that if polytechnics were not permitted to replace departing employees, the quality of TVET products would suffer and they would be unable to roll out new ones.

In a separate letter dated October 7, 2021, and sent to Adamu Adamu, the minister of education, Bugaje urged him to support the federal polytechnics’ need for replacement staff.

He added that the majority of institutions may lose accreditation as a result of their incapacity to replace retiring or exiting staff.

Meanwhile, the Committee of Federal Rectors (COFER) expressed concern in its letter of appeal that the hiring embargo could deprive the national economy of critical technically qualified workers.

They voiced worry that the majority of universities are stagnant due to a lack of qualified faculty.

When contacted, Bugaje verified the development, which he described as concerning because the sector risks reversing years of growth.

Bugaje pleaded on President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene immediately and reclassify polytechnics as part of the health sector, in order to lift the employment embargo and save the sector from collapse.

(Fi) NUTRITION AND DIETETICS (ND)

Prospective candidates should possess four (4) credits passes in WASC, SSSC and GCE ‘O’ level or NECO examination at not more than two sittings. The subject must include: Chemistry, Biology/Agricultural Science and any other two (2) of the following: Mathematics, Food and Nutrition, Physics, Economics/Commerce, Health Science, Home Management, English Language, Basic Catering ad Food Services.

At least passes in English Language and Mathematics are compulsory.

(Fii) NUTRITION AND DIETETICS (HND)

Prospective candidates should possess the requirement for Fiabove, a minimum of Lower Credit (CGPA 2.50 and above) in the cognate ND examination and a minimum of one year cognate work experience. In exceptional cases, ND Diploma with (CGPA OF 2.49) in the ND examination that had two or more years of cognate experience in the specific field may be considered for admission into the HND programme in Nutrition & Dietetics.

Gi) MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN

Prospective candidates must possess five (5) credit at not more than two (2) sittings in WASC, SSCE, GCE ‘O’ level, NECO or NABTEB examinations. The subject must include credits in Biology, Chemistry, English Language, Mathematics at not more than two (2) sittings.

(Gii) Retrainee MLA : Prospective candidates must possess Medical Laboratory Assistant Certificate with two (2) years post qualification in addition to Gi above.

(Giii) OND (in SLT): Candidates with OND in SLT in addition to the requirements in Gi above may be considered for admission into the 200 level of the programme.

Celebrations as Nekede Poly creates Nigeria’s first all-electric vehicle with over 90% indigenous content.

Federal Polytechnic Nekede in Imo State has provided delight and happiness to certain Nigerians by inventing the country’s first electric car with over 90% indigenous material.

The vehicle is primarily powered by a solar panel, which eliminates the need for fossil fuels. The automobile, which is the result of years of research, operates without an engine but has all of the other characteristics of a car. Engr Pius Nwosu of the Polytechnic’s Department of Mechanical Engineering is leading a team of engineers who invented the car. He is also an alumni of the college.

When the electric automobile was unveiled at the Polytechnic’s Engineering workshop, the Rector, Engr Dr Michael Arimanwa, praised Engr Nwosu and his team for doing the Polytechnic proud. He also lauded the team’s unshakable devotion to completing the mammoth endeavor, vowing to provide them with all required assistance in gaining the invention’s vital visibility.

The Rector said, “The polytechnic will take this project to the Inov-8 hub, which is connected to the Skill G Innovation Centre Abuja, so that potential investors from all over the world may view it and invest substantially in it.” From there, the Federal Government can take over and include it in the budget through the Ministry of Science and Technology.”

To further motivate the project’s main engineer, the Rector declared that the Polytechnic will issue him a praise letter in exchange for his formal submission of the vehicle’s specifications, from idea to research and creation.

Engr Pius Nwosu, speaking about his motivation for the project, stated that the Nigerian environment required eco-friendly vehicles as a result of the ecosystem’s pervasive pollution, adding that the electric car provided a way to avoid dangerous emissions produced by gasoline-powered vehicles’ engines.

Concerning the materials used to manufacture the car, the young engineer indicated that over 90% were sourced locally, emphasizing that the product demonstrated Nigeria’s capacity to create cars locally in order to halt the tide of automobile imports into the country. Regarding the timeframe of the invention, Engr Nwosu stated that it took him and his team approximately six months to construct the vehicle, adding that once the initial production is complete, following manufacturing will take less than one month.

Engr Pius Nwosu lavished praise on the Polytechnic’s Rector and Chief Executive Officer, Engr M.C. Arimanwa, for the great assistance he received that resulted in the vehicle’s successful invention. He noted the Rector’s facilitation of the TETfund facility as evidence of his commitment to research and development. “The Rector used his authority as Chief Executive of the Polytechnic to play a critical role in drawing the attention and support of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETfund), thereby transforming the project from a dream to a reality,” he explained.

A major highlight of the unveiling occasion was the Rector and his management team test-driving the electric car.

Departmental Cut-Off Marks for Federal Poly Ado-Ekiti in 2021/2022

Federal Polytechnic Ado-management Ekiti’s has issued the departmental cut-off mark for the academic session 2021/2022. The cut-off point varies from 40 to 57 points depending on the course.

All candidates should keep in mind that the cut-off point is calculated using the aggregate score of Jamb and Postume exams.

Note: Applicants to Federal Polytechnic Ado-Ekiti who have recently changed institutions and have a minimum score of 150 should send the following documents to ict@fedpolyado.edu.ng.

JAMB Cut-off Mark: Do not forget that the school has set a cut-off mark of 150 for the UTME in the 2021/2022 session.
